At Music Over Matter we believe that music is not a luxury but a necessity.
Music Over matter provides specially designed music lessons for the enjoyment and benefit of children with special needs. We also run workshops and lessons for parents, guardians and teachers wishing to build upon their skills and musical confidence.
Launched in 2018 by Music Performance Graduate Emma Hughes. Since gaining a PGCert in Sounds of Intent (specialising in music and SEN) as well as completing various placements at schools in the UK she has witnessed the importance of music in the lives of children regardless of ability. Each session is child-led consisting of a mix of listening, creating, interacting and performing to aid musical development.
Emma teaches lessons on piano/keyboard, guitar, percussion and vocals. The use of music technology (ipads, skoogs etc…) can also be explored where available.
With all the instruments students are given the opportunity to learn songs and explore their own musical ideas though improvisation. This is achieved through assessment using the Sound of Intent framework along side musical games, intensive interaction, and coloured notation. Lessons can also be adapted to tie in with any termly themes at school.
Musical development and enjoyment is the top priority but not the only. Every session also aims to also support the development of motor functions, cognitive ability, speech, emotional wellbeing and social skills.
Emma has previously worked a range of children and abilities including PMLD, SLD & MLD, as well as ASD, ADD, Dyspraxia, Down syndrome and visual impairments. She provides 1:1 and group lessons either at home or in school, as well as guidance and training for parents, teachers and carers.
